British Cycling has today confirmed that ‘laps out’ - where a rider is permitted to take a lap out of a race if they experience a mechanical difficulty - are no longer permitted in circuit races.

The rule was removed from regulations earlier this year and this has led to a number of requests for clarification with some organisers allowing laps out and others not.

Today the sports governing body has added a specific amendment to the regulations to ensure consistency across all levels of the sport.

British Cycling’s road commission chair, Tony Barry, explained: “Laps out haven’t been permitted in elite circuit races for some time and in other countries such as France, they have never been allowed. While we understand the arguments for keeping this rule, we need consistency across all levels to prevent people interpreting the rule in different ways.

“Unfortunately racing incidents - such as mechanical problems - are part and parcel of all disciplines of cycling. We need to make things as fair as possible for all involved and not permitting laps out is a way of doing this.”
