British Cycling is backing the Sport Relief Million Pound Bike Ride and calling upon its members to add their donations as seven celebrity riders aim to raise £1 million to help vulnerable people in the UK and in the world's poorest countries.

On Monday 1 March, David Walliams, Jimmy Carr, Fearne Cotton, Miranda Hart, Patrick Kielty, Davina McCall and Russell Howard embarked on a 1,000 mile bike ride from John O'Groats to Lands End taking it in turns to ride legs of the gruelling 80 hour ride, which finishes on Thursday.

Jonny Clay, Sport and Membership Director at British Cycling, said: "The Sport Relief Million Pound Bike Ride is not only raising funds for a worthwhile cause, it has inspired some of this country's best known celebrities to cycle and we believe that this will inspire others to follow suit."

"We are now calling on all British Cycling members and staff, most of whom, as regular cyclists, will appreciate the physical challenge faced by the seven riders, to donate generously to the cause."

All seven celebrities have also been given British Cycling Ride Membership, designed for commuters, sportif riders and fans of charity rides, with benefits such as legal support, liability insurance and discounts at selected bike retailers. British Cycling has also covered the cost of the event's insurance in recognition of an outstanding cycling-based initiative.
