Junior MTB XC Racing Opportunities

News on GB Cycling Team's Junior XC plans for 2010, which hold exciting World Cup opportunities for gifted riders.

British Cycling will not be sending a GB Junior MTB XC team to the 2010 European XC Championships in Haifa, Israel due to the extreme environment and location of the event.

British Cycling will instead invest in the Junior World Cup programme in 2010 to provide development opportunities for junior MTB bike riders. Junior riders entered will compete in GB kit as part of the National team. Only juniors born in 1992 and 1993 are eligible for selection for the 2010 Junior World Cup events and this will be on a discretionary basis by a selection panel. The selection panel will consider riders deemed to be competitive at this level and those who are deemed to have potential to win medals in Major Championships in future years, particularly the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The panel would consider the following factors in coming to a decision:

  • Race performances in 2010 Junior National Points series events. The selection panel will take account of age and experience of riders, as well as the quality of field and nature of the courses in competition.
  • Competitive performances in international events will receive a weighting.
  • Commitment to the GB Cycling Team anti-doping blood testing policies.
  • Specific nature of the course.
