Press Release: Kirklees Cycling Academy/Sowerby Bros RT Merger

27th September 2010

Dave Sowerby, owner of Sowerby Brothers Cycles based in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, (www.sowerbybroscycles.co.uk ) has announced he will now transfer all his current riders under the age of 18 from Sowerby Brothers Road Cycle Team to the recently formed Go-Ride Club, Kirklees Cycling Academy (www.k-ca.org) for the 2011 season onwards.

Dave has long been a passionate supporter and competitor in both the Regional and National cycling arena for many years. During this time, Dave has offered support to many young riders who have ridden in the Sowerby Brothers Road Cycle Team jersey. Recent finds by Dave include Mason Hollyman (White Rose Champion 2010) and both Jake and Rebecca Womersley (grandchildren of Tour De France legend, Mr Brian Robinson).

The significance of Dave's announcement is that he recognises that collaborating with a progressive club such as the KCA who are affiliated to British Cycling and are under-pinning the club with infrastructure and resources will help not only his current crop of riders to progress, but will also help develop a greater number of riders to access accredited coaching backed up by free use of Road racing bikes, Cyclo-Cross bikes and Mountain Bikes, Go-Ride Racing events along with other facilities such as 30+ sets of parabolic rollers and two newly purchased Wattbikes.

Darren Stringer, KCA Club Secretary welcomes this news. "I am really pleased to secure this commitment from Dave, I am absolutely convinced that we can help Dave's current riders progress even further, and importantly for Dave, he will have access to a club with a growing membership where we have a commercial tie in that benefits both Dave and our riders when they need equipment, bikes and sound advice from a passionate local businessman".

Peter Root the Regional Development Manager has also welcomed the news, saying "The move from Sowerby Bros RT to Kirklees Cycling Academy is most welcome. Dave and others in the cycle trade recognise the good work that Go-Ride clubs are doing. I hope that many other Racing Teams will follow this example"

The final word must go to Dave Sowerby himself.

'Cycle sport is Britain's fastest growing sport and the opportunities for youngsters have never been better, what the KCA are offering is both unrivalled and unprecedented in the UK and we are extremely fortunate to have this facility right on our doorstep here in Kirklees, I am very excited at the prospect of being able to get involved with the project'
