Sophie's Profile

Lichfield-born Sophie Capewell is one of the top sprinters in the world, claiming numerous national, Commonwealth, European and world medals.

Having been a prominent rider at youth and junior level, Capewell made her Great Britain debut at the 2015 UEC Under-23 and Junior European Track Championships in Athens, narrowly missing out on a medal with a collection of fourth and fifth-place finishes.

She did make the podium a year later, in Montichiari, winning two bronze medals in the 500m time-trial and team sprint. Capewell made the step up to the Great Britain Cycling Team Senior Academy later in 2016, and reinforced her potential with her first national titles in the keirin and team sprint.

As Capewell continued to rack up the national titles over the years, she made her world elite debut at the 2020 UCI World Championships in Berlin, but made her mark a year later in Roubaix with a bronze in the team sprint.

The 2022 season saw Capewell come into her own, claiming two medals at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games with a silver in the keirin and bronze in the 500m time-trial, before taking another team sprint world bronze medal alongside Lauren Bell and Emma Finucane.

The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow saw Capewell show her individual talent, qualifying second fastest in the women’s sprint with a personal best of 10.309. The young rider rode phenomenally to make it to the quarterfinals of that event, and later went on to take a silver in the women’s team sprint.

Capewell started the 2024 season with a bang, taking the European silver medal in the team sprint, before topping the podium in the same event at the UCI Tissot Track Nations Cup in Adelaide alongside Lauren Bell, Katy Marchant and Emma Finucane, the first British team to do so in 11 years.

Outside her life as a cyclist, Capewell is an advocate for women and girls in sport, with the aim to help empower a change in knowledge and understanding of the effect the menstrual cycle has for women in sport. She is also an avid photographer.
