Lizzie's Profile

Lizzie Armitstead is one of British Cycling’s success stories having risen up through the ranks of the Olympic Programmes after being spotted on the school playing fields aged just 15.

Lizzie suffered injury throughout the 2007/08 season which disrupted her training and slowed her progress.

In the latter part of 2008 though, an injury-free Lizzie wowed the crowds at the 2008 UCI Track Cycling World Cup, taking a hat-trick of gold medals in the points, scratch and team pursuit disciplines.

The rest of the 2008/09 track season followed with Armitstead winning an unprecedented nine gold medals in the world cup series, followed by a world champion title in the team pursuit, along with a silver in the scratch race and a bronze in the points race.

Lizzie has also enjoyed success on the road. In 2008 she played a key part in Nicole Cooke’s world championship winning campaign and in 2009 she had a stage win in the Tour de l'Ardeche and wore the white jersey as this year’s best young rider in the Giro d’Italia. In 2010 Armitstead won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The 2012 London Olympic Games saw Lizzie claim a silver medal in the road race after she made it into a four-rider break in wet conditions. The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow saw Lizzie claim the gold medal in similarly wet conditions.

In 2015, Armitstead was crowned road world champion as she won a sprint finish in Richmond, USA for the rainbow jersey.
