Laura's Profile

Laura began cycling with her mother, who took up the sport to lose weight.

As a junior rider in 2010, Laura won the junior world champion title in the omnium. She made her debut at the senior world championships in 2011, winning gold alongside Wendy Houvenaghel and Dani King in the women’s team pursuit.

At the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 2012, Laura was part of the trio who not only broke the world record twice in the team pursuit in one day but retained the rainbow jersey for the second year running. Laura also added gold to her growing collection by winning the omnium.

Her Olympic debut proved just as successful, as she (along with Dani King and Joanna Rowsell) won the gold medal in the team pursuit, breaking the world record a further three times in the process, meaning the trio broke the record six consecutive times. Laura backed this up with another gold medal in the omnium.

Laura's achievements were recognised in the 2013 New Year’s Honours list, in which she was awarded an OBE.

Since her Olympic success, Laura has carried on dominating the team pursuit and omnium events at World Cup and World Championship level, and has continued to retain the rainbow jersey in the team pursuit. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Laura overcame illness on the last day of the track cycling competition to clinch the gold medal in the points race, narrowly pipping Great Britain team mate Elinor Barker on the last sprint.

At the 2014 European track championships, Laura became double world champion in the omnium and team pursuit events for the second year running.

She followed this up a couple of weeks later by winning the gold medal in the team pursuit at the first round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Mexico. The second round of the World Cup series in London saw Laura do the double once again, taking gold in both the team pursuit and the omnium events.

At the 2015 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, the run of team pursuit wins came to an end as Laura and the team won the silver medal against Australia who set the new world record as well as winning the gold medal. Laura also picked up the silver medal in the omnium event.

Laura claimed a hat-trick of gold medals at the 2015 UEC European Track Championships, retaining her omnium and team pursuit titles and adding the scratch race gold to her collection - making her an incredible 10-time European champion.

Following on from triple gold in Grenchen, Laura continued her good form by starting the UCI Track Cycling World Cup with a gold medal in the first round in the omnium in Cali. At the final round of the series in Hong Kong, she won the gold medal in the omnium and the silver medal in the scratch race. Laura also rode in the qualifying round of the team pursuit where Great Britain set the fastest time, but was replaced by senior academy rider Emily Nelson for the finals so she could concentrate on the omnium event. The team went on to win the silver medal.
