Joanna's Profile

Joanna was spotted by a British Cycling Talent Team coach back in 2004 and was inspired by watching the Athens Olympics.

In 2008 Joanna won gold in the team pursuit at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Manchester and a successful defence followed in March 2009.

In 2010, Joanna took silver in the team pursuit at the world championships.

Joanna was part of the trio who broke the team pursuit world record in both qualifying and again later in the final to become world champions in 2012.

Joanna's Olympic debut at London 2012 proved successful as she, along with Laura Trott and Dani King, won the gold medal and broke the world record three more times in total. Joanna was awarded with an MBE for her services to cycling.

After a short break from track cycling, Joanna returned for the UEC European Track Championships in 2013.

At the UCI Track World Cup in Manchester, Joanna won gold in the team pursuit and individual pursuit.

The women's team pursuit squad continued their dominance at the second round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Mexico, where Joanna, Dani King, Elinor Barker and Katie Archibald won gold in a world record of 4:16.552.

Joanna became a double world champion in the 2014 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, winning the gold medal in both the team pursuit and the individual pursuit.

Joanna became Commonwealth champion in the individual pursuit at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and at the 2014 European Track Championships Joanna was crowned as the team pursuit champion. Joanna missed the first round of the 2014/15 Track Cycling World Cup series to focus on a road block of training but returned to the second round in London. Here, she helped the team pursuit squad qualify for the gold medal ride off, before cheering them on in the final on their way to clinching the gold medal.

Joanna and the team pursuit squad won the silver medal at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Paris in 2015, ending a run of dominance for the squad in that event. Australia were the gold medal winners and also set the new world record in the process.

Joanna has started the 2015/16 season in fine form, winning gold at the UEC European Track Championships in Grenchen in the team pursuit, riding the final alongside Laura Trott, Katie Archibald and Elinor Barker.

She followed that up with bronze at the opening round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Cali in extraordinary circumstances in October, as the trio of Rowsell Shand, Archibald and Ciara Horne defeated the Chinese quartet despite Elinor Barker's immediate withdrawal due to illness. At the final round of the series, Joanna and her team mates Elinor and Ciara plus academy rider Emily Nelson who was making her elite debut, won the silver medal in the team pursuit event.

At the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in London, Joanna and the team pursuit squad won the bronze medal having had a dissatisfactory qualifying round which placed them in fifth.
