Having displayed a keen interest in sport from a young age, Crystal was inspired watching Sarah Storey compete at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.
In 2009, Crystal applied for UK Sport's and the BPA's Talent 2012: Paralympic Potential programme and in December 2010 Crystal was announced as one of three athletes in the 'talent' section of British Cycling's GB Para-Cycling Team for 2011.
Crystal used to play football, where she competed at county level and she continued to play at an academy whilst she was studying for a BTEC in Sport Science.
In cycling, she made her international debut at the 2011 Para-Cycling Road World Championships in Roskilde, Denmark, winning bronze behind her inspiration Sarah Storey and Poland's Anna Harkowska. At the London 2012 Paralympics, Crystal placed fourth in the C5 Pursuit and finished sixth and 9th ninth the road race and time trial respectively.
In 2013 Crystal won the team sprint at the Newport International Paracycling Cup, before travelling to Mexico for the 2014 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships, where she finished fourth in the C5 500m time trial.
At the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championsips in 2015, Crystal won the silver medal in the 500m time trial and the bronze medal in the scratch race.
Crystal added another world championship medal to her collection in 2016, winning bronze in the 500m time trial, before finishing fourth in the scratch race.
