James Moss takes North East Region Road Race Championships title

Posted 18/05/2014 - Ben Dobson

Report by Snowdon Sports

James Moss soloed to a fantastic victory in the North East Region Road Race Championships in Barton, North Yorkshire on Sunday.

The 29-year-old Velosure-Giordana RT rider was part of an early seven-man break which managed to stay away from the bunch for the majority of the race.

A number of attacks were made in the formative stages of the race but nothing stuck until the seven men managed to peel away from the front of the pack.

With four-and-a-half laps to go, a number of other riders managed to bridge across to the leading group.

Then, with 14 miles left, Callum Greaves of Twenty2c had a dig, tearing away at the front. Not to be left behind, Moss reacted and went with him.

But Greaves couldn’t keep pace with his rival, leaving Moss to cruise to victory over the last five miles of the race.

Greaves was spent and dropped back to finish in seventh with TS Racing’s Dan Smith in second and Harry Tanfield of KTM road-and-trail.com in third.

Speaking after the race, James Moss said: “I said to Tom (Bustard) – as soon as any daylight appears, we just need to go for it. Tom bridged over but punctured and that took down our advantage really.

“With two laps to go, I attacked and ended up as a group of five. Just before the bell, Tom got over again and attacked straight away, which was perfect for me.

“Tom came across twice which was impressive and he’s had a very good ride. He’s strong as an ox. He was instrumental to the win really.

“It’s difficult in these races because everyone knows who to watch because of who you ride for, you’re fairly well marked and as soon as gap appears, you have to go for it.”

“I felt pretty solid all day, I just felt like I was going to win it, I’m not sure why but I felt incredible! I had quite a busy work at week but I still felt fresh.”

Shaun Tyson of Adept Precision RT came through a tight-knit race to take first place in the support race. Tyson won the race after pulling away with 11 miles remaining.

Greg Taylor took victory for Hetton Hawks in the junior race, leading from Ralph Hodgson and Harry Craig. The bunch stayed together, leading to a sprint finish at the end.
