Horton wins Sheffrec Spring Road Race

Sheffrec Spring Road Race
Report: Snowdon Sports

Madison Genesis’ Tobyn Horton came through a strong field to take victory in the Sheffrec Spring Road Race in Braithwell, South Yorkshire on Sunday.

The Guernsey man made his decisive move at the sound of the bell, tearing off the front of a broken-up bunch to solo to the line.

Thirteen riders broke clear after four laps, led by NFTO’s Dean Downing, Horton and Tom Bustard (Velosure-Giordana).

The course was fairly flat but rather exposed and winds battered the riders as they made their way around the 62-mile race took.

The gusts were especially strong at the start/finish line with a powerful headwind making for tough conditions. This saw the leading group whittled down to six riders after eight laps and they had built a gap of 48 seconds on the bunch.

Downing then took up the lead and was out on his own for two laps before being reeled back in on the bell lap.

But the bell appeared to be the signal for Horton to make his attack and he pumped hard to move clear of his rivals and take victory by five seconds.

There was still a hot contest on for second place though and Bustard and Downing were neck and neck going into the final stage of the race.

It was Downing who managed to grab second step on the podium, using the last of his energy to outsprint Bustard.

It was then 1:09 back to Wilson’s Wheels’ David Shackleton in fourth with the wind having broken up the rest of the field dramatically.

The women’s race was a more straightforward affair with the Matrix Fitness duo of Jessie Walker and Penny Rowson being joined by Starley Primal’s Tanya Griffiths.

Sheffield riders Walker and Rowson made numerous attempts to break the race up throughout but were thwarted by the winds and so it came down to a sprint at the end of the race.

It was 19-year-old Jessie Walker who had the energy to win it, with Griffiths second and Rowson third.
