The Condor Cycles London 3-day is a unique stage race being held at three London region closed circuits - Lee Valley VeloPark; Cyclo Park in Gravesham; and the Hillingdon cycle circuit. It is open to 2nd/3rd cat riders on a first come basis with no restriction on team size.

It will have excellent GC and stage cash prize lists totalling £1,100+, with transponders used for timing accuracy.

Regions link up for 3-day circuit RR

Three sets of organisers and the managements of three London state of the art cycle circuits have uniquely linked up to promote the Condor Cycles London 3-day race for 2/3 categories on 3/4/5 May. The venues are the new Lee Valley VeloPark, the Kent CycloPark and Hillingdon traffic free closed circuits.

In an example of how three different regions can work together for the broad based good of cyclesport, East London Velo at VeloPark headed by Jack Steven have now joined the organising team already composed of the SERR League and BC West Thames Promotions.

Co-ordinated by Stuart Benstead of Hillingdon, the SERR League headed by Kim Anderson is providing a core of the organisation by providing their transponder system and their Luke Anderson is to be chief Judge. He and Richard Hemsley of SE Region have drawn up specific rules to cover this unusual event, while Aidan Hegarty, of Central Region, with be the chief commissaire applying them.

Benstead and Jez Cox of VeloPark conceived the original idea and state: “We have observed in recent years the huge growth in closed circuit racing which in numbers is now bigger than open road racing. The increase in BC membership, including race licences, is bringing into the sport newcomers who welcome the opportunity of high speed racing in traffic free conditions. This ideally complements open road racing by providing safe bunched racing experience as a stepping-stone.

“More and more circuits are opening around the country and the Condor Cycles London 3-day will provide an example of how others can link up and provide a wider experience of different terrain and challenges.”

The event is aimed at the sport’s core 2nd and 3rd cat riders and entries are already nearing the budgeted number, being on a first come basis, no doubt attracted by the prize list of over £1,100 and the promised high quality of organisation.

Entries are via the British Cycling On-Line system and close on 20 April.

London circuits mount Condor Cycles 3-day

Riders have a unique opportunity in the Condor Cycles London 3-day to be held on three traffic free London purpose-designed race circuits. Especially tempting is that the first stage presents club riders with an early opportunity to compete at the brand new Lee Valley VeloPark circuit in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The innovative Condor Cycles 3-day stage race is to be held 3/4/5 May 2014. It will be open to 2nd and 3rd category riders with attractive overall and stage prize lists.

Following the opening stage at the brand new Lea Valley VeloPark circuit on the Saturday, the second stage is at CycloPark in Gravesham within the already preplanned SERR League meeting on the Sunday. The final stage is at Hillingdon on the Bank Holiday Monday.

Initiated by Jez Cox, Stuart Benstead, and Paul Panton, of the managements of the three venues, each stage will have a local organiser with supporting programmes of events that will vary in each case to promote local sport most appropriately on that date.

“We are thrilled to be supporting an innovative three day race series that is spread across iconic London, a place where Condor first put down roots over sixty five years ago. The event is a great platform for riders to gain experience of stage racing and show their talents. It also further deepens our commitment to grassroots racing, which we focus on with our development programme at Rapha Condor JLT as well supporting the grassroots programmes of County Cycles and Catford Bank Equipe RT": Grant Young, Managing Director.

The organisers all have thriving weekly leagues and want to offer their regular riders the opportunity to ride a stage race, which is a very rare opportunity at club level. It is also recognised that each circuit would gain by encouraging newcomers to look further afield to give a more balanced knowledge and enjoyment of what is available in the London area.

Each circuit is conscious of the huge growth in interest in racing by newcomers to cycling, whether through charity rides, triathlons, or inspired by watching the London Olympics from the roadside and the subsequent Surrey London race and sportive. This new stage race will broaden that experience.

Exact details are on the BC website. Basically it is for 2/3 cat riders, with all stages being 80km, with an entry fee of £65. Transponders will be used for ultra accurate timing, supplemented with photo finish or similar electronic equipment. Both the stages and the GC qualify for BC ranking points.
