Andy Lyons wins 2014 Richardsons-Trek RT Road Race

Posted 28/09/2014 - Dean Shannon

Written by Snowdon Sports

Richardsons-Trek RT riders dominated their own race with four of their riders finishing in the top 10.

They had a one-two finish with Andy Lyons leading the way home with team-mate Luke Ryan in second. Jason White of Clay Cross RT.

On a tough, rolling circuit, eight riders managed to make a break from the bunch and with a five-minute cut off rule enforced, many of the bunch were pulled out of the race.

Lyons and Ryan worked together, putting in a number of attacks and gradually whittling the number in the leading group down to five.

With a kilometre to go, 44-year-old Lyons had one last dig and was left to ride away to a comfortable victory.

Speaking after the race, Andy said: “It’s a great result for the team but I didn’t expect it. Luke was going well and there were eight of us away. I had a few little digs and we dropped that down to five.

“Then, at the end, I had few more digs and Luke put a few in too. I thought it’d soften the legs up of the other lads for the sprint.

“I think it just tired them out, it was a hard circuit and it made them weary. When I made my break, they just let me ride off.

“There were some good riders in the bunch that got pulled, I think some of them were probably taking it easy. I’ve got the Northern next weekend then I’m going to Mallorca for the masters so I’ve kept training for that.”
