Howells powers to front in 2014 Hackney CC Road Race

Posted 13/07/2014 - Neil Irons

Report by Snowdon Sports

Rhys Howells of Richardsons Trek soloed to victory in the Hackney CC Road Race, a race which saw the weather play a big part.

The start saw 40 hopefuls line up but conditions were dreadful with a deluge of heavy rain lashing the course.

The water levels at one point are estimated by organisers to have reached a foot in depth, leading to the neutralisation of the race.

The motorbikes supporting the race especially struggled although the perseverance of the riders and organisers saw the event reach a safe conclusion, albeit with only half of the field finishing.

A break after the first lap saw a group of five riders get away from the bunch with Roy Chamberlain (Team Corley Cycles), Rhys Howells, Ben Summer, Richard Wood (Arbis - Colbert Cycles RT) and Mike Debney (Cadence Cycling Performance) all moving clear.

They managed to build a large lead over the course of the following four laps but going into a climbing section on the approach to Ashton, Howells made his move and peeled away from the front of the leading group.

He went on to take victory by around half a minute with Wood finishing second and Chamberlain in third.
