Cronshaw defends title in 2014 Jef Schils Memorial Road Race

Posted 07/09/2014 - Nicola Schils

Written by Snowdon Sports/Ben Goddard

Matt Cronshaw (Velosure-Giordana RT) sprinted to victory from a seven-man breakaway to clinch victory in the Jef Schils Memorial Road Race at Marks Tey in Essex.

A large field of 85 starts competed in a Belgium kermesse style race where riders completed three different laps over 80 miles before an uphill finish.

After a fast opening lap where riders averaged 28mph a breakaway of 10 riders went clear on the hill prime which was later reduced to eight.

Despite never getting more than 1-30 the breakaway stayed clear of a 12-man chasing group and in the sprint finish Cronshaw, 25 and from Lancaster, took his sixth win of the season.

After the race Cronshaw said: “I have had a really good second half of the season figuring in the National Circuit Race series so was disappointed not to get picked for the Tour of Britain.

“But I have got on with it and used my form to win the race today.”
