Barker snatches victory in Evesham Vale RR

Posted 16/03/2014 - Andrew Tarring

Evesham Vale Road Race
Report: Ben Goddard/Snowdon Sports

Yanto Barker (Team Raleigh) attacked a six-man leading break before holding on for an eight-second victory in an excellent team performance at the Evesham Vale Road Race in Worcestershire.

Team Raleigh took a strong team of five riders to the 63-mile race around the Worcester countryside on a rolling course.

With many riders keen to attack early-on riders covered 45 kilometres in the first hour until a seven man leading break eventually went clear including: Yanto Barker (Raleigh) Liam Stones (Raleigh), Dan Fleeman (Metaltek Cycling), Matthew Clarke (Wheelbase Altura), Lawrence Carpenter (Catford CC), Jake Martin (Pedal Heaven) and Will Goulbourne (Corley Cycles).

This looked like the winning break until a group of 14 riders gave chase behind - including another three Raleigh riders.

With it looking touch and go whether the break would stay away Barker, 34 and from London, looked to split the front group. His attack was brought back but then Stones attacked, before Barker counter-attacked over a rise giving him the gap.

As the riders came into the final kilometre the 14-man chasing group caught the breakaway but Barker was able to hold on for a narrow victory.

His team-mates swept up the remaining podium places in what was a good day for Team Raleigh.

Barker said: “It was a really hard race, which was difficult to grasp because it’s not the biggest race but it was just as hard.

“The break established after an hour and we worked really hard to build a good gap on the bunch.

“When we got to the last lap I was conscious of what happened last weekend in the Jock Wadley Memorial RR when I finished fourth out of four. And knowing that we had some strong riders in the chasing group I started to attack to split the breakaway up.

“ Once I got the gap I pressed on and it panned out really well with a 1,2,3,4 for the team which is a good result and strong performance. When a team comes to a race with five strong riders like we did today people expect a strong performance so it turned out to be the best scenario today.”
