DESPITE being dropped from the leading group in the closing stages, Rob Partridge (Velosure-Giordana) struck back in style to take victory in the 32nd Jock Wadley Memorial Road Race in Essex on Sunday.

The 28-year-old from Leeds was part of a break which stayed away for much of the 85-mile race, which used 12 laps of a circuit based around Colchester.

The break went away at the start of the third lap and got up to around three minutes over the bunch, and although that came down in the closing stages they weren’t going to be caught.

Partridge found the going tough and with three kilometres remaining he dropped back, leaving the sprinters to ready themselves for a blast to the chequered flag.

But Partridge redoubled his efforts and came flying back, catching his rivals off guard, hitting the front and holding them off to take the win.

24-year-old Dronfield rider Adam Blythe (NFTO) took second, four seconds behind, while 30-year-old Graham Briggs (Rapha Condor-JLT) was third, seven seconds behind Partridge.

The win was Velosure’s second of the weekend following Tom Bustard’s victory in the Roy Thame Cup on Saturday, and Partridge said: “It’s great to get the win and cap a good weekend for the team.

“It was a pretty hard day out; we were trying to follow the moves from the off, because there were a lot of quality teams here capable of doing something.

“The break went after about 40 kilometres, and there were some quality riders in there from a few different teams. Eventually it was whittled down to four of us at the end.

“I was suffering a bit for the last lap or so, and got gapped with three kilometres to go. But I kept going and rode back up to the guys with one kilometre to go. The other guys were all sprinters and were watching each other, and I got a gap and caught them cold.”
