Report: Snowdon Sports

Twice second in earlier rounds and third a week ago, George Thompson (Sleaford Wheelers) finally made it on to top place on the Lincolnshire League podium at Sunday’s sixth round in Scunthorpe.

The 19-year-old from Sleaford, was at the head of affairs throughout the hour-long race and got away from his last remaining rival, Chris Metcalfe (Charge Bikes) on the final lap of the Foxhills Sportsground course to win by around 15 seconds.

Rain, which had fallen throughout the earlier races, cleared away by the start to leave a course which was a mixture of muddy, technical woodland track and drying grassland.

Thompson, veteran Dan Cook (Peak RC) and Mark Cotton (Ellmore Factory Racing) took an early lead of ten seconds over a chasing trio of Metcalfe, Keith Murray (Team Scott UK) and Rick Lister (Ellmore Factory Racing) on the opening lap.

Metcalfe bridged the gap to the leaders before Cook was detached and dropped back to join Murray with the gaps still quite small.

Cotton was then dropped with two laps to go, leaving Thompson and Metcalfe to fight out the win, and Cook found his second wind to leave Murray and ride back up to Cotton before going on to claim third place.

Provisional Results:

1 George Thompson (Sleaford Wheelers)
2 Chris Metcalfe (Charge Bikes)
3 Dan Cook (Peak RC)
4 Mark Cotton (Ellmore Factory Racing)
5 Keith Murray (Team Scott UK)
