Cross: Crabtree's Incredible Fancy-Dress Win

The annual Heptonstall Bowling Club charity Cyclo-Cross race attracted a record entry of over 70 riders. Dressed all in red as Mr Incredible, Rick Crabtree took the senior race in the photo-finish from long-time leader Huw Oliver, whilst Fin Cooper, in contrast, led the Under-12 race from start to finish.

A new course in a field adjacent to that used for previous editions of the race produced a longer and easier rolling course that suited the wide range of abilities on show.

However, this event is all about having fun and raising money for charity. The nearby Manorlands Sue Ryder hospice was this year’s beneficiary and the vast majority of riders and spectators stayed afterwards for the social gathering in the Bowling club in the village of Heptonstall, where a hearty lunch and big raffle kept the money rolling in, whilst the bar loosened tongues and wallets as everyone enjoyed a pre-Christmas chin-wag with friends, rivals and cycling mates.
