Team Certini rider Dexter Hurlock took victory in the Penair Cross, round seven of the South West League, staged at Penair School in Truro, Cornwall, on Sunday.

A field of 40 seniors tackled a course which featured a variety of terrain with long fast straights, slippery off-camber corners and long banked climbs. Overnight rain hadn’t generated much mud, but the ground was slippy with sporadic showers through the day.

Hurlock took victory after a very tight race with Matt Ziets (Pearson Cycles). The pair stormed away from the field during the first two laps and quickly gained a significant advantage over the next three Matts - Matt Richardson (3rd) from Matt Noble who just edged Matt Loake for 4th.

Junior James Davey continued his fine form by finishing 6th overall to take the category win ahead of seventh-placed Tim Carpenter winning the Veterans race. Carla Haines (WAC) took the Women’s race victory.

The youth race was run over 30 minutes on an extended circuit featuring two sections of banks with tricky off-camber sections. The field was bolstered by the entry of the local BMX elite including National Series and British Champion BMX rider Scott Dominguez, swapping his usual cruiser bike to show his national colours on a borrowed CX bike.

Charlie Meredith (Taw Velo) led the race right from the whistle, showing a very fast pace and wonderful skills on the off-camber chicanes which his rivals struggled to match. Harry Birchall (MDCC) tried admirably to match Charlie’s pace with Charles Hough (the Bike Cellar) coming in third overall and Scott Dominguez fourth.

The U12 race had started the day off on a slippery course following a quick rain shower. A massed start of 24 riders included 10 riders from the Cornish One and All cycling academy which is developing a huge reputation for developing young riders in the county. For many in the field this was their first attempt at a new discipline in cycle sport.

True to form under-10 rider Freddy Birchall (Mid Devon CC) dominated from start to finish leading the race around its four laps with an exceptional display with team mate Ross Pratt coming second overall.
