Report: Coventry Road Club Boxing Day 'Cross

Event: 26th December 2010, Kenilworth Common | Report and Images: Andy Whitehouse

Coventry Road Club hosted the annual post Christmas day cobweb blow-out 'cross at Kenilworth Common on Boxing day. As always a healthy (well as healthy as one can be on Boxing day) field took to the grid at the bottom of the Common Lane hill before cutting off left and into the wooded section leading up to the bombhole which as always was proving a more then popular place to watch the race unfold, the Kenilworth tifosi were, as always, in fine voice, the bigger the crash the louder the cheer.

A nasty little drag back out of the hole saw the course level out for a short while before the riders had to tackle the Turret, yet another vicious drop off which was proving a bit of a challenge for the more sensible of the field.

Above: The icy conditions didn't deter a healthy Boxing Day field.

Ben Roach(Cult Racing) led the field up the first climb from the off with Steve Allen (Unattached) and Liam Killeen (Unattached) glued to Roach's Rear tyre, Hope Factory Racing's Dave Collins was always going to be in the mix with the front runners and it wasn't to be long before he and Killeen would be out in front setting a blistering pace between them. By the midpoint of the race the leading pair had pulled a forty second advantage over the chase group of Roach, Allen and first junior on the course, Luke Grivell-Mellor(Mid Shropshire Wheelers).

Both Collins and Killeen rode tyre to tyre but it would be Killeen who at forty minutes would take the lead and retain it to cross the finish line and take the victory. First Junior home was Grivell-Mellor, first vet was Phil Roach (Coventry RC/Ride.cov) who rode a more the credible 7th place overall and the first lady over the line was Michele Paget (RLS4X.com).
