Jebb Dominates in Bingley Mud

Under-10 Race

Bradford RCC/Lynn Motors organised the seventh round of the Yorkshire Points Cyclo-Cross series at the popular Myrtle Park venue in the centre of Bingley, near Bradford.

The course, which mixes a long loop along the banks of the rider Aire, with twisting parkland and two run-ups, was damp and slippery - prime conditions for Cyclo-Cross - and with the weather chill but dry, a great turn-out of over 200 riders lined up for five races.

RACE REPORTS

The Youths opened the day's proceedings and it was another chance to see national champion Billy Harding up against Jake Womersley who has been a match for him for most of the season. Harding went into an early lead, but Womersley gradually brought him back over and the pair were together through the second and third laps. However, Womersley then produced a stunning lap, some 20 seconds quicker than either of them had done before and broke Harding's resistance to win by over half a minute in the end. Benny Pygott finished on his own in third, well clear of Seb Marsh. Under-14 star Amira Mellor was once again the leading female rider. Sam Dransfield was the first under-14 male rider home in 6th.

The Under-10 race was a run-away win for the fast starting (and finishing) Jenson Young, who flew round and won by over a minute and a half from Matt Taylor, who was in turn well clear of the chasing pack, who were led in by Ava Oxley, the first female rider. Marcus Hiley and Chloe Hinchcliffe were the first of the Under-8 riders to finish.

The Under-12 race saw a great battle between Thomas Humphrey and Lewis Haworth. Humphrey looked to have it wrapped up going into the final half lap, but a great effort by Haworth brought him level going into the last corner, where he ducked up the inside and powered over the line to claim a half-length win. Ellen Cameron was the first female finisher in 6th.

The Veteran's race saw Jonathan Watson get off to one of his usual rapid starts, chased by Chris Taylor and Mike Young. Watson had a gap of some 10 seconds at the end of the first lap. Taylor faded, but Young stuck to his task and for a time held the gap steady, but Watson kept up a hot pace at the front and his rivals simply couldn't match him as he gradually worked his way into a comfortable lead.

Young was, for a time, under pressure from Pete Wilkin, who had worked himself up into third place. But Young's efforts to keep Watson in sight eventually forced Wilkin to drop back and settle for third. Julian Hodgson was fourth, with Steve Barnes fifth. Junior rider Hannah Shenton was the first female competitor the finish.

The senior race was completely dominated by Robb Jebb, who looked in superb form and was clearly relishing the tough conditions and the two tricky run-ups per lap. Junior rider Jack Clarkson was the rider who led things out from the start, but once Jebb had wound him in, there was only one rider going to win the race. Clarkson soon had to turn his attention to preserving his second place as he came under pressure from first Rob Watson, and then fellow Junior, Joe Moses, who recovered well from a first lap mechanical to get back into contention.

Moses eventually caught Watson and then he and Clarkson began a battle for second place which was to last the rest of the race. Moses opened a gap of about ten seconds up, but Clarkson stayed with him and the pair were able to leave Watson well behind as the race entered the last couple of laps.

Jebb came in for a very coolly delivered win, looking like he been for a light training session, before Moses claimed second with Clarkson not quite able to get on terms, claiming third. Watson was fourth and tim Baldwin, who had dominated the early season races, fifth. Matt Denby was the first of the Yorkshire "Super-Vets" in 6th place.
