Report: GWR Floodlit 'Cross Round 6

Duncan Jamieson Takes the Series

Event: 3rd November 2010, Supermarine Rugby Club, nr Swindon | Report: Daniel Smith

The Sixth round of the GWR Team, Floodlit Cyclo Cross League held at the Supermarine Rugby Club, north of Swindon, saw Duncan Jamieson take his Fourth victory in the series in as many weeks, and in doing so claiming overall victory in the 2010 series.

The successful circuit, designed and built by Peter Kench, remained intact from the previous week, with the ‘whirly gig' extension around the club house. Working superbly to disorientate the racers and allow the spectators to see the race unfold in the main arena. The lap times were a consistent 4 minutes and 40 seconds per lap, with Jamieson managing to complete 10 laps of the circuit within the 40 minute format. As darkness fell, light rain and a very strong wind attacked the competitors turning the track greasy. Even with a slick track and cold temperatures, the course was fast.

With a record number of entrants for the series - 47 riders signing on for the sixth edition, which also posed as one counting round of the Weston league, the pace was high from the off and saw series leader, Luke Cowely (Swindon RC) lead out a three man group which included: Duncan Jamieson (Leisure Lakes), and Dan Lewis (RAF) with a small gap back to Craig Denning and Peter Kench as they entered the whirly gig for the first time. By the end of lap one Duncan had taken the lead with Dan in third and Peter and Luke chasing hard and the rest of the field strung out around the circuit.

Peter Kench, making his return to the series, after sitting out last weeks race, was hampered by his usual slow start, but forced his way into second place by the end of lap three only 10 seconds down on Duncan. This split the chasers behind with Luke in third and Dan having to retire early from the race after suffering a double puncture. Duncan timed his effort over the next Seven laps to take the win and commented afterwards ‘ that he was suffering a cold and was worried that he would not take the victory'. Peter Kench had pushed him all the way to the finish with only 30 seconds separating them by the line. Luke came in third a further 1minute behind. Due to the speed of the leaders only 6 riders finished on the same lap as the winner, out of the 42 finishers.

Duncan Jamieson now heads the table with one round remaining, his lead now unsurpassable. Cowley, drops to second and Kench climbs to third with Nick Onslow fourth, there is still a battle for the final podium placings as the best five results from seven counting for the overall.

Wednesday 10th November sees the final round in the seven race series, as battle resumes for the overall league prize of a free road cycling holiday in Spain, courtesy of Joy-riders. Race start is 7.30pm, entry fee is £10 and LED lights required.
