Report: West Midlands 'Cross Round 6

Wolverhampton Wheelers played host to Round 6 of the WMCCL on Sunday 31st October, held at Aldersley Stadium. As always a changeling but unusually dry course ensured the riders were kept on their toes with short sharp climbs and descents that had the riders reaching for either the gear shifters or the brakes. Again a clash of dates with the National series meant a host of riders made the journey to Ipswich but nonetheless the three main races of the day gave us a glut of fine racing.

Youth

The youth race got things of to a flying start with eventual race winner Jack Ravenscroft (Solihull CC) heading up proceeding from the gun with the host club's Chris Brookes hot on his back wheel and both riders already taking a fifteen second advantage over Tim Metcalfe (Wolverhampton Wheelers) and Halesowen's Sam Francks. The second time around Ravenscroft was stamping his authority over the race and was already pulling twenty seconds over Brookes who in turn was holding his own from a small chasing group that included Francs and Alex Mitchell (Solihull CC).

There was no let up in Ravenscroft's assault on the race and by the final time round the Solihull rider had pulled well over a minute on second place brookes to take a fine solo victory.The first girl home was Holly Page (Worcester St Johns) who rode in a credible 17th place overall.

Vet/Junior/Women

The largest field of the day was as always the vets/juniors/womens race and with 113 on the start grid it was always going to be a bottle neck in the early stages of the race but things evened out before the first climb up the steep narrow track on the back of the course. Steve Knight (Team Endura/MI Racing) headed up the field setting a blistering pace with Halesowen's Jacob James locked into his back wheel and Coventry Ride's Mark Garret and Lorenzo Buratti (Wyre Forest CRC) keeping a close eye on proceedings.

Host club's Shaun Hammond had worked his way through the field with Stourbridge Junior George Appleby and were catching the leading four. By the second lap Knight had upped the pace and was already eating his way through the back markers, James was finding the pace tough in only his second race back after breaking his collar bone and had slipped back into fourth place behind Buratti and Garret and with Hammond having the bit between his teeth the young Halesowen Rider would have to settle for sixth overall and first junior home.

Knight increased his lead on every lap eventually crossing the line well ahead of second place Mark Garret and third placed Lorenzo Buratti who just held off Shaun Hammond into fourth. Winner of the over 50s category was Peter Harris (Pearce Cycles) who rode a superb race to finish eighth overall after starting two minutes back.Beth Crumpton(Halesowen) was first lady home finishing 17th overall.

Senior

A field of 44 started the senior race and as the previous event a small group had formed at the head of race which included the eventual top three of Ben Davies (Cheltenham Cycles), Daniel Goode (Black Cat Racing) and William Penn (Mammoth Lifestyle RC). Davies had pulled a short lead over Penn and Goode by lap two but ASFRA's Perry Bowater had worked well to climb into forth spot. A few seconds back but still in contention saw Simon Maudsley(Crosstrax) and Richard Wilkinson (Probikekit.com). The half way point saw the first four hold their positions but things were about to change with a surge of power from Davies the Cheltenham Cycles man started to pull a gap on the group, a gap which he increased on the remaining laps to take an excellent victory. Bowater started to loose ground toward the closing minutes of the race eventually crossing the line in sixth spot. Dan Goode and William Penn kept their positions to cross the line in second and third place respectively but Simon Maudsley was still closing on Richard Wilkinson but the Probikekit.com rider held onto to take fourth place.
