West Midlands Cyclo-Cross League Round 4

With an excellent 10th place in the previous weeks National Trophy round and a storming start to the seniors race, Dan Booth (Cult Racing Cycles) looked a sure fire winner in the main race of the day but a brilliant ride by Darren Atkins (Coventry RC/Ridecov.co.uk) upset the apple cart and Atkins took a fine win.

With three of the Cult Racing Cycles riders, Booth, Ben Roach and another Payton (Tom) in the top ten, it proved to be a good day for the league's sponsors. A race long ruck between Payton and Rob Burns (Fred Williams cycles) saw 6th and 7th spot change throughout the race but it was to be Payton who took the eventual 6th place crossing the line just ahead of Burns. Raleigh RT's Ian Wright a 50+ veteran, was showing how classy a rider he is crossing the line in 13th place, one spot ahead of Robert Wimble (Zepnet Rt), again both riders fighting places out throughout the race.

YOUTH

With Callum Ferguson back in the fray, previous weeks winner Chris Brookes(Wolverhampton Wheelers) was going to have his hands full to keep the Halesowen rider from taking the win in the youth category. The race got off to a rapid start with the usual suspects heading up affairs. Ferguson, Brookes, Danny Fox (Solihull CC), Jack Ravenscroft(Solihull CC), James Plant(Wyre Forest CRC) and first girl through Charlotte Broughton (Leicester Off Road) were already on the front powering round the short course.

The second time through, Ferguson had started to show a clean pair of heels to second place Fox who in turn was holding his place from team mate Ravenscroft and Brookes. By lap four, Brookes had made his move to take third spot from Ravenscroft but couldn't make inroads on second place Danny Fox who held his own to take second position behind eventual winner Callum Ferguson. Chris Brookes rode a good race to take third place.

JUNIOR/VETERANS/LADIES

A field of 127 riders took to the field in the busiest race of the day and with riders returning to league racing after the previous weeks National Trophy round, things were going to be run off at a brisk pace on the relatively dry course. Alex Welburn (Max Gear RT) took the overall and junior race victory ahead of Joe Fox (Rapha Condor) and Luke Grivell-Mellor (Mid Shrops Wheelers).

Fourth place overall and 40+ Vets went to Phil Roach (Coventry RC/Ridecov.co.uk) after a strong ride keeping Steve Knight (Team Endura/MI Racing) on his tail. Another good ride by Kevin Payton (Stourbridge CC) ensured victory in the Vets 50+ and 12th overall. There were also category victories from Andy Jones (Wolverhampton Wheelers) Vets 55+, Pete Mooney (Rugby Velo) Vets 60+, Vic Barnett (Welland Valley CC) Vet 65+, John Griffin (Elizabethan CC) Vets 70+ and Mick Gray(Wyre Forest CC) Vets 75+ kept the points rolling in.

Another Payton name was up on the leader board with the women's race being won by Hannah Payton (Stourbridge CC), a fine victory following on from her 6th place in the previous weeks National and well ahead of her closest rival, Beth Crumpton(Halesowen CC). First Lady Veteran home was Ruth Eyles (Beacon RCC)
