The 3rd round of the Eastern cyclocross league was organised by CC Ashwell and held in Baldock, Hertfordshire on Saturday in dry conditions. The Senior, Junior and Elite Veteran race was dominated by Hugo Robinson (XRT - Elmy cycles), the national youth champion led from start to finish, opening a small gap on the 1st lap then simply riding away from his rivals, behind Robinson a select chase group of 7 riders formed, Andy Nichols (cambridge uni),Greg Simcock (phil corley cycles) and Andrew Waterman (dulwich paragon) were active trying to chase, whilst Robinson's teammate Nathan Miller disrupted the chase, hanging on the back were Shaun Aldous (extreme sports therapy), Kevin Knox(dulwich paragon) and Gary Lingard (cc hackney).
With half an hour gone Waterman made a bid for the second spot on the podium, at first taking Nichols and Miller with him but the London riders pace was too much for the Eastern pair and they dropped back, both being caught and passed by Aldous and elite veteran Knox, the strength sapping drag at the far end of the field took it's toll on riders later in the race and the only sprint for placings was between Simcock and Gavin Rumbles (cc luton) the later catching a flagging simcock late on only to be overhauled on the line.
Winner Robinson doesn't turn 16 till December has his sights set high this season, not content with the Youth National Championship title he's hopeing to get selected to ride the European Champs and looks likely to miss the 1st round of the National Trophy at Abergavenny this weekend opting instead to ride the Superprestige race at Ruddervoorde in Belgium.
David McMullen (evans cycles) was a convincing winner of the vets and womens race, riding away on the 1st lap and was never troubled, winning by nearly 2 mins from Tim Butler (ipswich BC) with Bob Pisolker (finsbury park) outsprinting Lee Desborough (st ives cc) for the final podium spot a further minute behind.
Womens winner Clare Beaumont (rapha condor) overcame a bad start to catch Sue Wood (maldon cc), after a mid race tussel Beaumont came out the winner 20secs clear of Wood with Camila Boyton (Dulwich Paragon) completing the podium.
The youth race was a three way battle between Josh Parkin (vc londres), Sean Dunlea (pca ciclos uno) and Alan Trolove (west suffolk wheelers), locked together until the final lap when Trolove crashed leaving Parkin to outsprint Dunlea to the line. 1st girl was Keira McVitty (kings cliffe flyers) taking 10th overall.
George Jenson (lea valley youth) was a clear winner of the under 12's race, Ben Tulitt (palmer park velo) and Zak Coleman (gt yarmouth cc) had a close battle for the minor podium placings.
