Report: GWR Floodlit 'Cross Round 1

Wednesday night saw the first round in the GWR Team Floodit Cyclo Cross League series, held at the Supermarine Rugby Club, north of Swindon, and local youngster Luke Cowley stormed to victory.
Race organiser Dan Smith, along with Andy Smith of Swindon Road Club prepared the course during the afternoon, and the course featured some grassy banks and fast straights on the top section, with the lower section hard going on wood chippings and through the trees, which would later see the lead riders taking around 5 minutes per lap. With rain having fallen for much of the day the course was muddy in places, but a brief period of sunshine prior to darkness falling saw overhead conditions being dry for the race.
With the race also counting for points in the third round of the Western League, 27 riders signed on for the event. From the start Dan Smith (GWR Team) and Craig Denning (Dream Zero) set a fast pace for the first half a lap, but were soon joined by junior rider Luke Cowley (Swindon RC), Nick Onslow (Pedal On) and Peter Kench (GWR Team). But as they completed the first lap Denning led through with Cowley, then a small gap to Onslow, Kench and a fading Smith.
On lap two Cowley took the lead from Denning and held it for the remainder of the nine lap race to take an excellent victory. Meanwhile Kench overhauled Denning on the penultimate lap to claim 2nd , with Denning holding on for 3rd with Onslow 4th, while 5th and first veteran was Andy Roberts (Evans Cycles). The first woman home was Claire Smith (Swindon RC).
Wednesday 6th October sees the second round in the seven race series, as competition hots up for the overall league prize of a free road cycling holiday in Spain, courtesy of Joy-riders (www.joy-riders.com). Race start is 7.30pm, entry fee is £10 and LED lights required.
