National Youth Cyclo-Cross champion Hugo Robinson (xrt - elmy cycles) now in the junior ranks won his first senior race on Sunday, outsprinting last seasons eastern league champion Andrew Nichols (cambridge Uni) to win round 2 of the eastern league, the springfield cross at Chelmsford.
Fast dry conditions greeted riders for the start of the senior race with several riders opting to use slick file treads, once the gun fired the charge away was led by Matt Cook ( WV Eemland ), Robinson soon took control and opened a slight gap but with a strong wind blowing across the course he was brought back and after a couple of laps a group of six riders formed at the front of the race, joining Robinson were Nichols, Cook, Shaun Aldous (extreme sports therapy), Andy Waterman (Dulwich Paragon) and his veteran teammate Kevin Knox.
Though several riders had a go at spliting the group the wind detered riders from spending too much time dragging others along, it wasn't until rain fell just after halfway through the race that this group broke up, with Waterman using file treads he slid away on an off camber section, Robinson who was leading at the time capitalised on this opening a gap which only Nichols managed to close, Nichols led after the last set of steps but Robinson was too quick in the sprint and came past to take the win. kevin Knox chased Aldous all the way to the line to finish first elite vet in 4th overall.

Geoff Bores (ford cc) and Tim Butler (ipswich bc) were locked in battle at the head of the vets and women's race, it wasn't until the penultimate lap when Bores managed to shake Butler off.
Susan Wood (maldon cc) was again dominant in the women's race, back after missing last season through illness, she seems stronger than ever after a summer spent mountain biking and took 10th overall, not far behind husband Gary who was 4th, their son George was also back racing in the youth race taking 2nd behind a run away winner Alan Trolove (west suffolk wheelers) who opened a gap on the 1st lap and never looked back. George Jenson (lea Valley youth) had a narrow win in the U12's just beating Ben Tulitt (PPV).
