Jebb and Cook in Charge!
Slideshow
The third round of the Yorkshire Points Cyclo-Cross series took competitors to the Camp Hill estate near Bedale in North Yorkshire. Charge Bikes' Jonathan Watson had plotted a cracking course which took in mixture of estate roads, slippery grassland and some pine woodlands, with winding trails and technical challenges. And credit to him for securing the venue at only a couple of week's notice after his original hosts pulled out.
Action from the Youth race
Youth Race: First to try out the course, just as the early morning rain was abating, were the Youth riders. Making his usual quick start was national champion Billy Harding, but right on his wheel was Edwin Oliver-Evans, with Ben Pygott and Seb Marsh also in close attendance.
Harding pushed on and was gradually able to build up a lead, though his repeated failure to overcome a short, steep run-up mid-lap, when Oliver-Evans was able to get up it every lap, limited his gains. On one lap, Harding stalled, lost balance and went for an unplanned visit to the local nettle patch. But, towards the end he was able to relax a little and claim a good win, but it had been by no means easy.
Pygott and Marsh were inseparable for almost the entire race. Marsh was largely content to sit on Pygott's wheel until the last lap, when he took advantage of a rare slip from his rival - on that tricky run-up - to attack and with only a few hundred yards to the finish he was able to hang on to take third.
The under-12 race gets underway
Under-12 Race: Jenson Young was the winner of the Under-12 race. Despite being an under-10, he confidently claimed the win after five laps of a fun and technically demanding course. Nicole Stiff was the first girl, in sixth. Annie Feetham was first under-10 girl, whilst Marcus Hiley and Chloe Hinchcliffe were the first under-8 boy and girl respectively.
Eventual winner Dan Cook leads Peter Wilkin, Mike Young and Steve Barnes in the Veterans' race
Veteran & Women Race: The Veteran and Women's race also saw a close battle. Mike Young was the first to show at the head of the field, riding clear on the long, gently climbing start straight. By the mid-lap point he had Dan Cook, Peter Wilkin and Steve Barnes for company. This quartet stayed together for a couple of laps, until Wilkin, who had moved to the front and was setting a high pace, slipped on - you guessed it - that slippery run-up.
Cook and Young avoided Wilkin as he struggled to get going again and both put the hammer down, leaving Wilkin and Barnes, who had become entangled with him, a good few lengths down and with their earlier momentum gone.
Young tried to stay with Cook, but couldn't quite hold on. With the elastic broken, Cook continued to push on and gradually built up a lead of half a minute. Young held him at that, but couldn't get close enough to pressure him. Cook went on to claim the win, with Young on his own in second.
Behind them, the Wilkin and Barnes battle went the way of Barnes, who seemed to find the course to his liking and looks to be running into form. Wilkin was fourth and the first over-50 finisher. Meanwhile, Adela Carter took the women's race with some ease, working her way through the field with style after a quiet start and finishing a couple of minutes clear of Jessica Roberts.
Winners - Adela Carter, Steve Barnes, Dan Cook, Peter Wilkin and Mike Young
Senior & Junior Race: The final race of the day saw the Juniors and Seniors tacking a course which, although bedded in, was becoming increasingly slippery and bumpy. Off the start there was a big fright for fast-starting Paul Bethel, who seemed to pull a foot out whilst in second place in the charge up the long start straight. He did wonderfully well to stay upright, but lost a lot of momentum as riders streamed round and past him.
Paul Bethell nearly falls as just seconds after the start
By the mid point of the first lap, Ian Taylor had a small lead over Rob Jebb and Noel Clough, with Tim Baldwin, Joe Moses and Rob Watson close behind. It soon became apparent that it was Jebb who was in the groove the quickest. He dropped Clough, wound in Taylor and passed him to take the lead and then put his head down and began to build a lead.
Clough was also looking strong and he too closed down and overtook Taylor, mid-race, and then set about chasing Jebb. Taylor was still looking good and had built up a decent gap over Baldwin, who in turn had a bit to spare over Moses and Watson. One rider who wasn't faring so well was Chris Young. After a decent start he rapidly went backwards and soon retired, unwell, sensibly recognizing that it was foolish to press on when feeling less than one hundred percent.
Up front, Jebb continued to churn out the laps, edging away from Clough all the time, until the bell, by which time he had over half a minute lead and was able to cruise round the final lap to claim an impressive win and a nice moral-booster ahead of next week's Three Peaks, where he will be looking for an eighth win.
Clough, who also looks to be running into form ahead of the National Series, which begins in Abergavenny next month, was second. Behind him Taylor looked to have third sewn up with two laps to go. However, as he faded, Tim Baldwin was putting in a remarkable late surge and he passed the early leader mid way through the last lap to claim third. Taylor was fourth and Joe Moses fifth and first Junior rider. Moses and Jack Clarkson- who was tenth after chain troubles - will also be looking forward to the National Series, where they ought to make an impact.
A happy looking Rob Jebb crosses the line to claim the win
Winners - Noel Clough, Tim Baldwin, Joe Moses and Rob Jebb
The series resumes in two week's time at the Jonathon Noble Memorial Cross at Temple Newsam on 3rd October.
