Prestigious National Cycling Event Comes To Derby

Story posted February 22, 2010; Source: www.derbycyclocross.org.uk

Action from this year's championships in the Junior Mens race.

In a big sporting boost to the city, Moorways Stadium in Derby has been selected to host British Cycling’s National Cyclo-Cross Championships in 2011. This will take place over 2 days on 8th and 9th of January. This follows a successful series of races that have been organised over the last three years by John Holmes and his team from Derby Mercury, South Pennine and Heanor Clarion cycling clubs.

Experienced as race organisers at a local level, the team held the Midland Championships at Markeaton Park and followed this with two National Trophy races in Derby. The most recent of these was at Moorways last October and national cyclo-cross officials recognised the professionalism of the event as a whole and have awarded the hosting of the two day event to Derby.

To launch the event, next week there will be a photograph opportunity at the Council House in Derby at which the Mayor of Derby will be present along with sponsors and Cycle Derby officials. There will also be special guest appearances from two of our newly crowned national cyclo-cross champions. To compliment the main event there is a series of children’s races that will take place on the same weekend at Osmaston Park, which is adjacent to Moorways. These events are set to be as successful as those last year that attracted 200 riders. These races are organised by Cycle Derby and British Cycling and are aimed at local school children but are also open to younger riders from around the country.

As ever with this type of event the organising team relies heavily on the support of sponsors and next year will be no exception.  Organiser John Holmes said “It is great to secure this, the top event of its kind in the country. Over the last three years we have used various Derby locations and now developed the Moorways races to a very high standard so we are pleased to get the recognition. Several sponsors have seen the success of our events and the TV coverage that it attracted.  We are grateful therefore to Total Hire, Raleigh, Derby Brewing Company, Schwalbe, Prestige Partitioning & Storage Systems, High5, Flowfayre and RJ Engineering for their continued support.” The team are also bidding for the support of the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA).

Note: Reporters and photographers are invited to attend the photoshoot, which takes place at 10.30 February 23rd 2010 at the Council House, Corporation Street, Derby DE1 2FS.
