Heptonstall Fancy Dress 'Cross
27 December 2009
Heptonstall Bowls & Social Club, Heptonstall, West Yorkshire HX7 7LT
With the snows finally beginning to clear after a week of arctic weather, the annual charity Yorkshire Fancy Dress Cyclo-Cross, gave riders the chance to burn off a few of the Christmas calories in a strictly for fun Go-Race event, high in the Pennines.
Organiser Fred Rothwell did his usual top job of combining some fun racing with a thoroughly enjoyable pie and peas lunch and raffle, with local charities benefitting.
First off were the under-12s and they did brilliantly, coping with a rough and tough little course, with a smattering of snow keeping things interesting. Joe Parker was the winner, whilst Seth Bolton and Amy Hinchcliffe took the fancy dress prizes, though all the riders deserved credit for their imaginative outfits.
The remainder of the riders rolled out half an hour later and some cracking battles saw the likes of Fred Flitstone going head-to-head with Mother Christmas, Super-Girl and Elvis, with the Mummy and various other Christmas trees, best men, Sumo-wrestlers, horse riders, rabbits and Noddys also in the mix!
Rob Thackray's Mummy, Claire Crabtree's Super-Girl, Chris Barnes' Christmas Tree and Jim Shenton's Elvis - with sound effects - took the outfit prizes, whilst Pete Middlehirst won the race itself.
