Mat Cork is British Cycling Recreation Manager for the Eastern region and commutes on a pimped-up Dahon Uno folder or an equally custom Cannondale CaaD5 fixie. Mat commutes three times a week but like most bike commuters he wishes it was more.

Name: Mat Cork

Job Title: Rec Manager – East

Tell us about your commuting rig (don’t be afraid to get geeky):
I’ve got two, one for visits locally or in the region, the other where a train is involved. First up my five year old Cannondale Caad5 converted to fixe with the help of goodies from Velosolo. Is battered and bruised, but still going strong - no mudguards, but a Portland Design Works Machete on the back to keep the muck off. In London etc I use my Dahon Mu Uno folder in matt black...tweaked with some carbon bars and Schwalbe Kojak slicks. I’m a ‘light’ anorak...never scrimp on them and have a nice set of Lupine Wilma’s...only need charging once a week, brilliant.

What’s your commute like (how long, hilly, flat, on road, off-road both)?
Working at home it depends where I have to go. I work in Peterborough a lot and it’s a 15 mile journey on quiet pretty lanes to the edge of town, then the cracking Green Wheel bike path all the way to the city centre. I put a lot of miles in around London, from Kings X to wherever, always taking in Look Mum No Hands if heading East or The Milkbar if heading south.

How many days a week do you commute by bike?
Three days a week, wish it was more.

What do you enjoy the most about bike commuting?
Clears my head, get’s me out of my comfort zone/comfy life, means I can still eat nice stuff and remain at a steady weight without dieting.

What’s your least favourite thing about commuting by bike?
Headwinds. The east is windy and the ride home generally into the wind.

What are your main reasons to commute by bike? (e.g. to keep fit, to save money, etc)
More fun than driving.

Have you got any funny or interesting bike commuting stories or experiences to share?
Not funny at all, but I had my previous bike stolen in Covent Garden in broad daylight on a commute to Lewisham. One lock not enough, double lock em in the capital.

What’s your killer commuting tip?
Buy a nice simple bike, but buy something that’s fun to ride. If you enjoy riding it, you’ll ride it more. I also carry a few essentials all the time, not just tools, but a fiver and some energy gels...rarely use them, but if you get caught riding home in the winter and feel flu coming on etc, they can be a life saver.

How does your British Cycling membership support your bike commuting?
Peace of mind. Simple.
