Cycling England Abolished
National cycling advisory body axed in widespread 'QUANGO' cuts
Posted: 14th October 2010
Cycling England, the advisory body for cycling in England, has been axed in the latest round of public spending cuts. The news comes as part of a widespread review of Government spending on so called QUANGOs and other non-governmental advisory bodies. Also facing the axe is the Commission for Integrated Transport, which was set up to provide 'blue sky thinking' on promoting alternatives to the motor car, as well as a number of other advisory agencies.
Cycling England was an independent body set up in 2005 by the DfT, to "promote the growth of cycling in England by championing best practice and channeling funding to partners engaged in training, engineering and marketing projects."
The Government has said that, in Cycling England's place, it will set up a Local Sustainable Travel Fund and "explore ways of marshalling expert input on cycling issues".
