We are British Cycling - we are bike commuters

Lee's commute takes him into Maryport on the north Cumbrian coast, with great views over the Solway Firth and the Western Lakes. Little wonder he enjoys his daily 16 mile roundtrip so much.

Name: Lee Wassell

Workplace: Netherhall School, Maryport , Cumbria

Tell us about your commuting rig:
I’ve got a Orbea Aqua in orange and black. Great fast ride. Currently building an old Dawes Horizon frame for high winter!

What’s your commute like?
All road but I love the eight miles to work and back. Steady climb to start then undulating with a steady climb about half way to make sure that I am awake. Views over the Solway to my right and the west Lakes fells to my right. Best times of year are spring and autumn with the sun rising over the fells as I spin in. There are a few diversions that I can take to make it more interesting.

How many days a week do you commute by bike?
I do at least 2 days a week but usually 3 to 4 times a week. Keeps me sane!!

What do you enjoy the most about bike commuting?
The time to myself and own thoughts, time to get my head straight and prepare for the day with no noise or distractions. The fresh air, rain, wind and simply turning the pedals as fast or slow as I feel.

What’s your least favourite thing about commuting by bike?
Drivers who don’t tink that you can do more than 10 mph and who think you only need 3mm to get past you, even though you are lit up like a Christmas tree!!

What are your main reasons to commute by bike?
Keep me sane, fit (cheeky miles), combat the stress of work, combat the history of heart disease in the family but mainly because I LOVE it!!

Have you got any funny or interesting bike commuting stories or experiences to share?
There is an owl that must roost in a building close to the road as I have been scared witless as it swoops across the road in front of me in into the field to the right.

Took me a while to work out what he buzzing was on a climb on the way home. Thought that it was my bike. It ended up be the pylon that I pass twice a day.

What’s your killer commuting tip?
LIGHTS LIGHTS LIGHTS, ride as if no one can see you. SMILE, be smug that you are not in a car, and enjoy every pedal revolution!!

Are you a British Cycling Member?
Yes I am. Bronze!
