Bryn Primary School, in Neath Port Talbot, is the first school in Wales to receive a School Mark Award from sustainable transport charity, Sustrans, for its dedication to transforming the journey to school, by encouraging more pupils to cycle.
On Wednesday 28 April, Jane Davidson, Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing, presented the school with the bronze award to congratulate pupils, teachers and parents for encouraging over a third of pupils to regularly cycle to school.
Sustrans began working with the school in September 2008 and appointed a dedicated member of staff, known as a Bike It officer, to help children overcome the barriers that were preventing them from cycling to school.
The school now holds a weekly cycle session on a Friday afternoon, and different events throughout the year, including: bike breakfasts; skills sessions; guided bike rides; and bike mechanics and puncture repair sessions. These events helped the school to increase the number of children cycling regularly from around three in 10 to seven in 10.
