Wolverhampton Wheelers Track League

Event: June 16, 2010; Story posted June 22, thanks to Dave Brookes | Website |

Despite a glorious summer’s evening, the turn-out was slightly down but the racing remained as enthusiastic as ever and none more so than in the younger categories where we saw youth rivals Jack Escritt and Emilly Nelson working together to dominate their races and only battling with each other right at the closing stages of races.

The final race of the evening was a departure from the normal format with a punishing 20 km handicap of Senior A, Senior B and invited Youth. The first five places of the Intermediate Sprint were all taken by Wheelers: 1st Steve Sanders, 2nd Alan Hilleard, 3rd Alan Cooper and 4th and 5th places to Youth competitors riding up Chris Brookes and Tim Metcalfe respectively.  Another young athlete riding up, Adam Lewis took a well deserved 1st place after the full 20 km, this time leaving a bemused father Mark well down the field.

Jack and Emily, although not picking up any points on this event never the less rode an impressive race. But now the league is well underway, it might prove useful to look at the current rankings of individual riders to see if any conclusions can yet be drawn. The clear leader so far in the Freewheelers is Ben Hardwick with Matt Lewis more than twenty points behind. The Youth are much closer and although Emily Nelson currently leads, Charlotte Broughton and Jack Escritt are just two and three points behind.

Steve Croggon is the clear leader of the Senior B category but second and third places are all in more contention. Jack Hibberd leads Ewan McDonald by just three points in the Senior A category but Adam Lewis is snapping at their heels in third place.  In short nothing is decided yet and everything remains to be fought for.
