21 April will see the Rough Rider Sportif - West Riding Classic in the Yorkshire Dales, which, as well as three variously challenging routes, promises an exciting gastro-sportive experience at its feedstations.
In a recent release to the sportive press, organiser Brendan confirmed his intention to "start a food revolution in the cycling community... ...spurning the usual boring fare of energy bars, gels and isotonic water in favour of real food."
The Rough Rider West Riding Classic, with 38, 63 and 75 mile options, takes riders through the beautiful limestone scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, not an area to be cycled without adequate nutritional support. Thankfully, the Rough Rider team are all over it.
Brendan continues: "Rough Rider... ...will serve cyclists local speciality Yorkshire Parkin (a sweet ginger cake) and a high energy roasted apple and butternut squash soup. We at Rough Rider have taken part in many cycling sportifs, and one of the main reasons for setting up this event was the disappointment one always feel when arriving at the feed station."
Brendan goes on to describe the nutritional benefits of the age old Yorkshire Parkin recipe, beloved of generations of Yorkshire miners. His reasoning? If it's good enough to sustain a shift down the pit, it's going to keep you going on an all day bike ride.

Eschewing the usual 'grab a gel and run' feedstation philosophy the Rough Rider intends the feed station experience to be 'social'. "Cyclists will dismount and eat at Horton Village hall half way through the ride, an opportunity to relax and take in the beautiful surroundings." Most civilised, we think you'll agree. And best of all, the gastronomic experience is included in the ticket price.
Routes pass several famous landmarks and cinematic backdrops including Ribblehead Viaduct, the whitewashed village of Dent, Inglebrough and world famous Malham Cove and Malham village.
