There was some thrilling and hard-fought racing action on Sunday as Scarborough hosted the final round of the British Cycling National Youth Circuit Series.

YOUTH A BOYS

Thomas Pidcock (Speedflex RT) continued his good form as he took a fine win over Cameron Orr (Sherwood Pines SRAM) in the Youth A boys race.

A field of over 100 riders navigated their way round the tight hill climb circuit that saw a number of crashes and battered bodies after the 10-lap race.

A frantic pace saw the field split as early as the opening lap, many unable to stay with the main group. A group of seven managed to secure a small lead away from the bunch, the group including Ben Turner (Paul Milnes-Bradford) and Conor Davies (RL360 IoM) who would ultimately finish in the top ten.

As the front of the race hit the climb for the first time, a break of five attacked the field. Charles Page (Edgeware RC) headed the small group away and had some 15 seconds on the field as the race hit the climb for the second time.

The group were still away but looking tired, Jake Wright (Sportscity Velo) tried to bridge the gap but a reaction from the main field would bring the breakaway back before the race, once again, approached the climb.

The third time up the hill would be the defining attack of the race. Ben Turner once again was in the thick of the action and along with Orr would attack on the climb.

Pidcock responded, sensing the danger, and went on the chase along with Joe Nally (Hardie Bikes), Conor Davies and Jake Wright and although the two leaders would last another lap it would be Pidcock and Orr who had the legs to go on the final lap, Orr succumbing to the final attack from the race winner.

Adam Jarps (Hetton Hawks) outsprinted Bourne Wheelers Adam Botterley to take third.

YOUTH A GIRLS

Sophie Wright (Strada Sport) took another race win after attacking the field the first time up the hill. Wright, who secured the MTB national title and Series earlier in the season, proved she can win on tarmac after holding Pfeiffer Georgi (Giant CC-Halo Films) into second.

With the race run over six laps of the flat top circuit before hitting the big circuit, the pace was to be high from the gun. Isla Rush (WyndyMilla) took the first opportunity to attack, the field allowing her just a few seconds on the front.

Maddie Gammons (Bourne Wheelers) tried her luck too, but both were reeled in before the big climb, again the defining point of the race where Wright skipped away off the front making the incline look flat, while the majority of the riders had to dig deep to keep up with the pace of Wright.

Georgi went on the chase but was unable to catch the lone leader who crossed the line alone. The national champion’s jersey of Stirling's Jenny Holl held on to a chasing Ellie Russell (Sportscity Velo) to take third while Fiona Turnball (Speedflex RT) took fifth a couple of seconds down.

YOUTH B BOYS

Lewis Askey (Lichfield City CC) took victory in the youth B race, the national champion proving too strong for Dylan Westley after the two attacked the field on the penultimate lap.

It was Irfan Zaman (Bigfoot Go-ride) who made the early move of the race, chipping away on the second lap and remaining away for the following four laps until the race hit the big circuit and the climb.

Zaman, although still sitting on the front the first time up, had Askey sitting on the front of the main bunch picking the pace up and starting to chase.

The Bigfoot rider managed to hold on until the following lap, but his earlier efforts had proved too much and along with Westley, Askey made his move. A group of seven tried to chase the duo down but to no avail and the two leaders were away.

Askey dropping Westley on the final lap to take the win, while Adam Scarfe (RL360 IOM) beat Pedalsport's Max Rushby to take third.

YOUTH B GIRLS

Becky Surridge took the win and the Series title in the Under 14 girls race, The VC Londres rider proving too quick after a gallant chase by Anna Shackly (Glasgow Riderz) and Ava Oxley-Szilagyi (PH-MAS VCUK).

As expected the opening eight laps of the flat circuit were ridden as a group even though a small group tried to break away before the race hit the climb.

Surridge made her move the first time up the climb. Shackley and Oxley- Szilagyi were quick to respond and chased down but couldn't quite bring Surridge back and had to be content with second and third across the line.

YOUTH C

National Champion Max Poole took victory after a hard battle with second place Owen Lightfoot. Poole looked the more comfortable on the climb but was pushed hard to the line by his rival. Bryn Richards took third and Isabella Escalera was the first girl home in 12th.

YOUTH D

Jed Smithson (Hillingdon Slipstreamers) took the win and the Series in the Under 10s race.

Smithson went for an early attack and kept the lead to the chequered flag, Niall Colquitt (RL360 IOM) taking second in the sprint with Kyle Jones (Maindy Flyers) third.

YOUTH E

Jude Du Toit (Newark Castle CC) took a fine solo win in the Under 8s race, holding off Seth Jackson (Kirklees Cycling Academy) and series winner Ryan Oldfield (Redditch Road and Path CC) after the trio rode away on the opening lap of four.
