2013 sees the launch of a Team Diabetes UK, an Elite cycling team based in the South West.

The team is headed up by Ian Rees, an Elite UK rider having Type 1 Diabetes for the last 12 years. Ian was ranked 7th in the UK during 2010.

The goal for the team is “to fundraise on behalf of Diabetes UK, promote the awareness of diabetes and encouraging healthy living, through an elite cycling team”.

Ian Rees commented “Having raced at an elite level for a number of years, I’m able to manage my sugar levels pretty well which has been important considering the amount of racing and training I do. I see many diabetics out there who struggle with this condition and my dream has been to help by promoting sports and healthy living”.

Team Diabetes UK has been supported by sponsors, including Clarke Willmott, a national law firm, specialising in sports law”. Philip Allen, Head of Business Development and Marketing commented, “We are delighted to be supporting Team Diabetes UK in its first year. It’s an exciting project and we wish them the best of luck for the season ahead”.

The team will initially consist of six riders:

Ian Rees
Toby Eicher
John Whittington
Paul Merryweather
Kevin Jones
Charley Bradley

“We hope to build on the squad during the year, with plans to expand in 2014” said team leader Ian. “We are keen to hear from anyone interested in supporting us with the team, including riders suffering from type one and two diabetes."
