On-song Pete Williams led an impressive one-two for Node4 Giordana Racing at the 85-mile Drummond Trophy road race in Lanarkshire.

Williams and Kiwi Mike Northey dominated the closing stages of the Glenmarnock Wheelers promotion at Strathaven, finishing nearly three and a half minutes clear as the Node4 squad got the better of a showdown with Team Raleigh.

Both teams had three riders in an initial break of ten, which then came down to eight with Ben Greenwood (Vanillabikes.com) and Andy Coupe (Herbalide-Leisure) the interlopers.

Continuing the form he had shown at the Tour du Loir et Cher the previous week, Northey launched a solo effort ad opened up a gap of around a minute with Raleigh forced to lead the chase but unable to bring him back before, with 15 miles to go, Williams also clipped away on a climb to bridge the gap alone and join his team-mate.

“It worked out well for the team,” said 25-year-old Williams, from Skipton, North Yorkshire. “We were the strongest there.

“I’d had a fair ride behind Mike, but when it came to the sprint I think he was repaying me for the work I did for him in France. I had good legs but put aside personal ambitions for the team as he was leading. It was a good show of our form.”

Race sponsor Norrie Drummond, of Drummond Racing, was chalking up 56 years of continuous support of the event.
