The Tour of Britain Stage 6: Taunton - Wells
Location: Taunton
Event: 16 September 2011

Local professional cyclists, including Sigma Sport - Specialized's Simon Richardson, who hails from Shepton Mallet, and Rapha Condor Sharp duo Tom Southam and Dan Craven, have helped launch the Stage 6 finish of The Tour of Britain in Wells.

The Tour of Britain comes to Wells on Friday 16 September for the finish of the 2011 Somerset stage, the first time that Britain's biggest professional cycle race has visited the city. Stage 6 will finish in Wells at around 1.30pm in the afternoon, with spectators at the finish line getting an additional opportunity to see The Tour of Britain in action as the day's third and final Yodel Sprint takes place at the Priory Road finish line.

From the first pass through Wells The Tour of Britain will climb Old Bristol Hill before passing through Shepton Mallet for a second time and returning to Wells for the exciting conclusion to the Somerset leg of the race.

"We are pleased to be bringing The Tour of Britain to Wells in 2011," said Mick Bennett, Race Director for The Tour of Britain.

"The Tour of Britain enjoys fantastic support from the people of Somerset, so I'm sure we can expect a bumper crowd in Wells for the stage finish. When you combine this with the fact that the stage finish is on a Friday afternoon, just a short distance outside of Bristol, then I am confident Wells will enjoy some of the biggest crowds anywhere on this year's route."

Stage 6 of The Tour of Britain covers 146 kilometres of Somerset roads on its way to Wells. Sixteen of the world's top teams, including the likes of Team Sky, the HTC Highroad squad of Mark Cavendish and the world's number one ranked team Leopard Trek.

The Tour of Britain begins in the Scottish Borders on Sunday 11 September, visiting England's Northwest, Stoke-on-Trent and the Staffordshire Moorlands, Wales and Devon, before Stage 6 takes place in Somerset.

Following on from the Somerset leg, The Tour visits East Anglia before the final day of the race takes place in central London on Sunday 18 September, as the battle for the race leader's IG Markets Gold Jersey reaches its climax with an individual time trial and circuit race on the streets of Whitehall and Westminster.
