Scott takes victory after eventful race

Youth Tour of Blackpool - National Youth Circuit Race Series

To mark the opening of the new Palatine track in Blackpool a full day's youth racing was organised by Cycling Development North West.

Eight laps of the new circuit were christened by the young riders in the Youth D & E category. Herne Hill Youth's Ben Tullet took the race from Johnny Bouch (Border City) and Royal London's Charlie Gibson. The Youth E category was won by Percy Hampton of Isle of man's Royal London.

Alice Barnes of Motorpoint took a fine win in the girls A & B race, just holding off a charging Charlotte Broughton (Leicester off road) and Halesowen's Emily Kay. The young Motorpoint rider was dominant throughout the thirty five laps either trying to get away or chasing down escapees. Group B rider Broughton rode to an excellent second place just losing out in the sprint to Barnes.

Tomos Owens made his intentions known in the opening laps of the Youth C race, the Mid Shropshire rider headed up a small break of three on the second lap of the fifteen lap race and was orchestral in all of the moves in the race.

With the lead swapping and changing throughout the race it would be down to Owens and Daniel Tullet (Hargroves) to take a hold of the race in the closing laps and with two laps to go they had pulled a gap of 38 seconds back to the chasing group. Owens took the sprint from Tullet to claim the race win.

Jacob Scott took a commanding victory in the Youth A race. The Planet X rider took the win riding away on the last lap from Royal London 360's Jake Kelly. The race was restarted after a mass pile up in the opening lap which saw around half of the 57 starters hit the floor.

Kelly and Wolverhampton Wheelers' Adam Lewis made an early break from the bunch but was soon chased back by Scott and Aire Valley's Olly Wood. Such was the pace early on it soon ripped the main group apart and for the remaining laps the field would be strung out. With ten laps remaining Scott and Kelly were still holding their own at the front of the race while Maxgear's Chris Lawless used his enormous turn of speed to try and close the gap but it would be to no avail and was reeled back into the group.

With four laps remaining the two leaders were still hanging on to their lead which was being trimmed by a small group of three chasers and by the penultimate lap had reduced the lead to seven seconds but Scott and Kelly held on and with half a lap to go Scott stamped on the pedals to ride away from Kelly to take the victory.

Ryan Phillips took a fine sprint win from Salt Ayre's Fabian Brennan in the Youth B race. The Wolverhampton Wheeler was a main protagonist of the race and rode a measured effort throughout. The group stayed together pretty much for the majority of the race with riders trying their luck off the front only to be swept up by the peloton as soon as the moves went.

Proceedings took an upward turn with four laps remaining when Jack Escritt (Wolverhampton Wheelers) put the pressure on and took team mates Phillips, James Ireson and Salt Ayre's Brennan along for company. On the next lap Alex Braybrooke (Velocity Race Team) went for the jump but was pulled back by Escritt. Ireson went on the bell but again wasn't allowed to escape and Phillips waited till the death to take the victory salute.
