Report: Hillingdon Circuit Series Week 3
Event: 19th April 2011
Promoted by: West Thames/West Drayton MBC
Venue: Hillingdon Circuit
Report: Mark Doel, Central Regional Events Officer
UPDATE FROM REGIONAL EVENTS OFFICER: Due to confusion caused by an accident in the 3/4 race and having to finish the two races close together an error was made in original reporting and results of the E123 event. Please find the correct result below.
Week 3 of the Tuesday evening circuit races promoted by West Thames Promotions and West Drayton Mountain Bike club saw a lovely spring evening welcome the riders. The Commissaire and officials made a decision to cut the races short due to an accident that involved Hillingdon regular Mario Manelfi (Blazing Saddles). Mario was assessed by the first aider and an ambulance was called.
The new classification, of the Reg C, 3rd/4th category event, saw 30 riders start with 4 riders making a decisive break at about half distance. They were Ralph DeKanter , Ben Moores, Jason Humphries all from Norwood Paragon and Gareth Thomas (Kingston Wheelers). They all worked very well together and once they had a gap never looked like getting caught. The Norwood Paragon trio took the first 3 places with Ralph De Kanter running out the winner, the break finishing 1 minute ahead of the rest of the field led home by Karl Smith (Cycle Club Basingstoke).
The E123 race also saw a break as well involving Jamie Pine, Rafa Rodriguez and Lewis Atkins. Also there were Ian Paine (London Dynamo), Matt Myers (Pasta Montegrappa), Tao Geoghegan-Hart (CC Hackney) and Dante Carpenter (Asfra RT). The pace was high all the way through the event with one rider's Garmin recording 28mph average and top speed of 40mph.
Riding in his first full season Jamie Pine from LeCol caught his breakaway companions napping on the last lap and jumped away holding a slender advantage that at the finish line was 5secs. Jamie only started cycling last year and completed in the Imperial Winter Series where he had some successes and won a round. He has already made it to a 2nd Category rider so someone to watch in the future.
Update is Mario is out of hospital a bit sore but ok.
