Story posted February 25 | Team Press Release, Photos Cheryl King
The 2011 Motorpoint Pro-Cycling Team has been officially launched at the company’s headquarters in Derby. The car supermarket giant has significantly increased its investment in the sport to help assemble one of the country’s most talented cycling squads.
Led by Malcolm Elliott, the team line-up includes three-time national cyclo-cross champion Ian Bibby, Jonny McEvoy, Pete Williams, James Sampson, Lee Davis and Andy Roche. They have been bolstered by the arrival of Marcin Bialoblocki and Will Bjergfelt from Willier/Bigmaggys, Tobyn Horton from continental outfit Team Sprocket, Andrew Magnier from CyclePremier, and most recently, Mark Thwaites from My Team Giordana.
All of the riders will be using the new 2011 Pinarello Paris Carbon, finished in Motorpoint’s distinctive black and orange livery, which is equipped with Campagnolo 11-speed Super Record groupset, Look Keo pedals, Corima Aero Plus & Corima MCC wheels, Schwalbe tyres and MOST Talon handlebars.
The team will be managed by Malcolm Elliott together with Chris Truett, who arrives from Raleigh, and overseen by team owner and former cyclist Phil Griffiths.
Although they will be focused mainly on all of the premier cycling races in the UK, such as the Halfords Tour Series, Premier Calendar and of course the Tour of Britain, the team will also compete in Europe, Asia and North America with the Ras in Eire, the Norwegian Ringerike GP and the Tour de Beauce in Canada all on the schedule for 2011
The team has already been in action, flying to India to compete successfully in the Tour of Mumbai alongside the likes of Radioshack, where they came away with two top five finishes. Says David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be once again involved in British pro-cycling and look forward to building on the success the team enjoyed last year both here in the UK and abroad.”
