Lewisham families are getting on their bikes and celebrating the best of the borough.

Dozens of cyclists came together with high spirits last weekend, determined to enjoy fun, family bike rides through Catford and Lewisham as part of Sky Ride Local

Chris Hurst, one of British Cycling's trained Ride Leaders, said the rides were a positive reminder of Lewisham's real community spirit after the recent unrest by a minority.

He got up extra early to welcome cyclists and make sure everyone had a good time pedalling.

Chris said: "I've been living and cycling in London for 11 years now and the social atmosphere on this weekend's Sky Ride Local ride really stood out to me. Everyone chatted along the way and people just seemed happy to be together and share some time riding through the parks as a community. The first timers said they'd be back for more.

"I love cycling and became a Ride Leader to share my passion and experience with others in the hope that they will enjoy cycling too. There are rides all throughout London every week and I'll be leading some of them so I hope more people will join me."
