The Fully Sussed Summer Series returns for 2012 with events in five venues, aiming to showcase the diversity of great South West venues.

From the historic mining terrain of United Downs to the pebble-bed heathland of Woodury Common, organisers are determined to show that the South West should be as much a mountain bike destination as Wales or the Lakes.

The 2012 series is particularly focussed on women and youth cycling. In association with British Cycling, Fully Sussed is changing the format of the day to maximise the benefit for the under 16s. Their full day of competition will kick off at 10am with a variety of skills stations designed to test and improve the core skills of young riders. Each skills station will be set out with three progressively harder skills to test bike handling skill, balance and concentration.

Riders will then have a chance to rest, eat and find out how their parents got on in the Senior XC race and they’re off again at 1pm with their own XC race, on a 3km circuit designed to create fast, close and spectator-friendly racing. Their scores from the morning stage will be combined with their position from the XC stage to give an overall result. The titles of South West Youth and Juvenile Champion will be decided over the five rounds. Through the series, Fully Sussed aim is to develop the regions youth riders to be able to compete at the highest level.

Organisers are delighted to have Specialized on board as series sponsor and events will incorporate the bike brand’s Fate 29er demo tour. Fully Sussed invite you to come along for a spot of skills teaching with experienced Elite rider Maddie Horton on the race course, on a 2012 women’s specific mountain bike. Specialized is continuing its investment in women’s cycling by providing all the prizes for the women’s race categories.

Fat Spanner has come on board to provide the prizes for the men’s categories, and the South West champs jerseys will again be provided by Custom Sports Clothing.

Local bikes shops will be on hand with tech support, products for sale and a shoulder to cry on. Local caterers – and who can forget 2011’s curried goat wraps – will be chosen for their quirkiness and diversity of menu.

South West cross country racing is gaining strength every year. How far can Fully Sussed take it? In their words, “The world’s our lobster.”
