Privateer has made had quite an impact in the MTB magazine landscape since its inception late in 2010. The quality production of publishers Rouleur, coupled with the legendary writing skills of Editor Tym Manley, have received rich plaudits and the magazine has moved to a bi-monthly publication and healthy sales figures in independent bike retailers and via subscription.
Following this rapid expansion, Privateer is further bolstering its team and investment with the appointment of former MBR man Andy Waterman, who joins as Deputy Editor.
"Privateer magazine has been extremely well received and thanks to our growing army of retailers and a steadily expanding subscription list, we are now selling out of each issue of Privateer," states Manley.
He continues: "We're delighted to have got to this level of sales so quickly and we're going ahead according to our most optimistic expansion plan. However, the time is right for us to ensure that this growth continues and we are able to realise our ambitions for the magazine, thus the need to bring in a Dep Editor.
"Andy Waterman started with me as a staff writer at MBUK way back and I saw his potential early on, so it's a bit of a coup for us to attract such talent so early in the history of Privateer. Andy is a great writer and full of creative ideas which he will have greater scope to develop at Privateer."
Waterman is rightly excited about his move to Privateer.
"After 6 years at MBR the time was right for me to move on and realise a new challenge, and when the opportunity to join Tym and the Privateer team arose I jumped at it. I can't wait to start in the role of Deputy Editor at Privateer - to describe it as a dream job would be an understatement.
"So many aspects of the mountain biking experience go unreported in mainstream MTB mags, so to be given the opportunity to delve deeper than the obvious, in a package that looks as good as Privateer, is going to be a real priviledge. Bikes in all their forms have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Like many MTB'ers, I don't come from a cycling family, so the driving force guiding my early cycling dicoveries as a naive 13 year old was MBUK magazine. As such, I'm excited to have the opportunity to work once more with Tym Manley, a guy who shaped so many mountain bikers' introduction to the sport.
"One of my first jobs will be to travel to Eurobike to spread the Privateer word to the global mountain bike industry and community, and of course the German consumers."
