Obituary: Alan Mason, Club Secretary, Membership Secretary, Social Secretary, Treasurer and Honorary President of Eastlands Velo and Sportcity Velo.

On Tuesday last week we received some very sad news. Alan Mason, who we all know, love and rely upon hugely passed away during Monday night. Alan had been poorly for some months and was recently taken into Willow Wood Hospice, he died peacefully in his sleep.

Alan was a Founder Member of Eastlands Velo in 1996, and Sportcity Velo in 2002. Whilst most of our volunteers shied away from some of the more complex and mundane tasks vital to the running of a sports and social club, Alan selflessly picked up any task required, quickly accumulating the list above. As you know Eastlands Velo runs sessions three times a week at the National Cycling Centre and Alan, until the last few weeks of his life attended all these sessions week after week, year after year, a dedication unmatched by any other Member.

Alan will be sadly missed by all of us for the wonderful, kindly man he was and for the incalculable effort he put into keeping our valued and hugely successful Cycling Clubs up and running.

Alan’s Family, being aware of how much a part of his life Eastlands Velo and Sportcity Velo were, have said that anyone from the Clubs or the wider Cycling Community who wishes to attend his funeral are more than welcome.

His funeral will be on Thursday October 20, 2.30pm at Dukinfield Crematorium.

Flowers are family only, but donations are to Willow Wood Hospice, Willow Wood Close, Mellor Road, Ashton under Lyne, OL6 6SL.

Recollections of Alan’s contribution to the Club and lifetime in cycling are being received all the time and will be posted on the Eastlands Velo website in continuing memory of our good friend.
