Enthusiastic young racers kick started the road season at the first Go-Ride Road Race of the year at Tameside circuit on Saturday 02 March.

Riders took part in a 1km individual time trial as well as a sprint competition and a road race at the Ashton-under-Lyne circuit built in 2010.

For many riders the event was their first ever road race. Despite this inexperience there was some fantastic racing and some close finishes, especially during the sprint contest.

Local Mossley CRT rider James Donaldson stamped his authority on the Youth E time trial with a super quick time, setting up an epic battle with Ethan Grimshaw of Bolton Hot wheels in the Road Race. Donaldson proved the victor with Grimshaw taking 2nd overall followed by Mckenzie Lee in his first road race.

Nathan Fortune’s excellent sprint rounds in the Youth D competition secured victory before the road race with Chester Go-Ride’s Evie Black the next strongest competitor.

A strong entry in the Youth C category set the day up for some close racing. Bolton Hot Wheels Tyler Koch put in a strong time in the time trial finishing in 1min 47 seconds. This time looked untouchable until Kirklees Academy rider Adam Fortune clocked 1min 45seconds. In the sprint contest Jacob Wolfenscroft was unbeaten as was Koch who also managed to break away during the road race to secure overall victory. Fortune took silver with Eastlands Velo rider Ben Ryder taking bronze.

In the Youth B competition Leanne Hall rode fantastically well as the only girl in the category clocking up the second fastest time trial time, with Isaac Appleby the quickest. Jack Lane took overall victory after a strong sprint round and road race.

Eastlands Velo rider Matthew Cosgrove looked rapid during the TT clocking the fastest time 5 seconds ahead of his nearest rival Matthew Varcoe and Patrick Fairhurst. Matthew Spooner bolstered his overall score taking back to back victories in the sprint round along with Cosgrove.

All riders raced with a fantastic attitude and gave 100% commitment to each race. A big thank you goes out to the parents, riders and volunteers who supported the event.
