Great Britain’s youngsters were out in force again at the Laoshan Velodrome for day two of the UCI Beijing Track World Cup.

The day opened with men’s omnium qualifying as Great Britain’s George Atkins narrowly missed out on a place in the heat 1 qualifier, finishing thirteenth with only the top 12 going through. Uzbekistan’s Vladimir Tuychiev headed the field with 43 points, followed by Australia’s Glenn O’Shea with 29 points and France’s Bryan Coquard taking third with 28 points.

It was then the turn of World Cup debutant Victoria Williamson and, in context, the experienced Becky James in the women’s team sprint. A time of 34.654, with an opening lap of 19.984, saw the duo finish 10th in qualifying. The only sub-19 second opening lap (final time 32.598) in qualifying from home nation China topped the board with Lithuania joining them in the gold and silver medal ride.

Trade teams Giant Pro Cycling and Max Success Pro Cycling confirmed their places in the bronze medal ride.

In the men’s team sprint Philip Hindes, Peter Mitchell and another World Cup debutant in Callum Skinner went out with Canada in the qualifers – clocking 45.351, six tenths of a second off a medal ride. The Moscow Track Team and China making the gold and silver medal race with New Zealand and Venezuela the bronze ride.

The final event of the afternoon session saw Owain Doull a promising third in the first qualifying heat of the scratch race, comfortably through to the evening session's final.

The evening saw Great Britain face New Zealand in the bronze medal ride after Thursday evening’s qualifying. The foursome of Mark Christian, Sam Harrison, Joe Kelly and SImon Yates managed 4:06.853 but missed out on a medal as their opposition registered a time of 4:03.758. In the final Australia were forced to settle for silver with Ruselvo winning by over four seconds in 3:56.993 to take gold.

After his third place in the qualifiers, Owain Doull completed GB’s participation for the day with a twelfth place finish in the scratch race final, Russia’s Kirill Sveshnikov lapping the field on his way to gold with Spain’s Albert Torres Barcelo second and Aliaksandr Lisouski taking bronze.
